How Express Entry Works

In regular federal draws, only the highest-ranked profiles receive an Invitation to Apply. If your CRS score is already competitive against recent draw cutoffs, applying directly through Express Entry is usually the faster route.
How PNP Fits In
Provincial Nominee Programs let individual provinces nominate candidates who meet their specific labour market or connection criteria — often people with a job offer, relevant work experience, or existing ties to that province. A provincial nomination adds a large, fixed boost to your CRS score, which can turn a borderline profile into a near-guaranteed invitation in the next Express Entry draw.
So Which One Should You Aim For?
- If your CRS score is already competitive: apply directly through Express Entry — there's no need to add the extra step of a provincial nomination.
- If your score is below recent cutoffs but you have a provincial connection: a PNP stream matched to your background (work experience, a job offer, a relevant degree, or family ties) can be the more realistic route.
